Transforming from "IT to Digital" in a global manufacturing business

The challenge

The CIO of this global manufacturing giant recognised the need to accelerate the change of their IT function from a traditional and somewhat slow-moving technology-focused function into a fast-paced digital enabler of the enterprise, able to make a difference to the bottom line. They reached out to HiveMind as a fresh alternative to the more traditional large-scale consulting firms.

The solution

We started by working with the global IT leadership to develop a clear, compelling picture of what the new ‘Digital’ function could look like.  This was achieved in a matter of weeks using well tested design thinking techniques combined with deep subject matter experts.

Once consensus was reached across the highly federated landscape, HiveMind, together with the team, developed a new and detailed IT Operating Model (ITOM), which involved blending the best elements of federation and centralisation. With the CIO gaining the full support of their board, HiveMind was retained to help turn the vision and ITOM into a reality. We used our concept of fusion teams to pull together client specialists and our experts to mobilise, operate and execute a global shift in the capability of the IT function.

The result

Together with our client we delivered the following; A Digital Enablement strategy, underpinned by a new ITOM and a supporting business case showing savings in excess of £40m. We then supported the execution of a multiyear transformation programme encompassing; Data centre consolidation and optimisation, agile working methods, integrated service delivery, new ways of working globally and a Transformation office to steer and manage the programme.
